"Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for their labor.
For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
But woe to him who is alone when he falls,
For he has no one to help him up.Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone?Though one may be overpowered by another, two can
withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken."
NKJV (1982). (Ec 4:9–12). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
It is good to be alone at times also, but “a person is not an island unto himself”. We need others. These past months have not been easy for many of us. My doctor has told me to stay home as much possible. Going to the grocery store is ok once in a while, but they suggested I don’t go to church or to places where I would be sitting in a “crowd”. It is hard not to be able to go to church…
Anyway, having someone to help us or being a person others can rely on is something we all need in life. Solomon was not the only person who wrote about this either… many people have but Aristotle wrote about friendship and the need for friends in Nicmachean Ethics. I found a copy of this when I was in college and read it. It was cool to know others felt the same as Solomon.
"After what we have said, a discussion of friendship would naturally follow, since it is a virtue or implies virtue, and is besides most necessary with a view to living. For without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods;” Nicmachean Ethics Book VIII
